The latest ‘hipster’ trend to hit cafes around Australia has to be that of the Matcha latte. The vibrant green drinks that boast a slew of health benefits has captured the attention of health-conscious café goers. But what is Matcha? And is it as really good as it is made out to be?
Matcha is made out of finely ground green tea leaves, and has been a staple in Japanese and Chinese cultures for thousands of years, particularly for use within their tea ceremonies. There are many compounds in matcha which are known tas being powerful antioxidants, one such is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is known to protect against heart disease and some cancers. The other reported health benefits include its metabolism boosting effect and its calming or relaxing nature.
What is most important to consider is some of the health benefits can be undermined when enjoying it as a trendy matcha latte as sometimes it is sweetened to make it more palatable. However if you are wanting to change things up a bit the Matcha Latte is a great way to start your day.
