How Best to Store Coffee Beans

The number one question that we are asked, is how best to store coffee beans, to preserve freshness and flavour. Read down, to find out the number one failsafe method!

There are 3 main factors which are most readily responsible for impacting upon the flavour and freshness of your Coffee Beans.

Air

Coffee is another product like wine, that is known to oxidise when exposed to air. This means that airtight containers are always best for storage. Additionally, it is always suggested that beans are kept whole rather than ground when storing, as the increased surface area of the ground coffee bean can speed up the oxidising process. It is suggested that ground coffee has a life span of around 3-5 minutes!

Moisture

Coffee absorbs moisture from the surrounding environment, which in turn will suck out much of the aroma and flavour from your beans. It is therefore not advised to store coffee in your fridge or freezer as both of these areas are quite damp, and coffee when stored in the fridge can often absorb unwanted aromas. Dry places are always best!

Heat and Light

When coffee is warmed up too much, the beans begin to release the oils which are a major source of the flavour, great when you are trying to extract the perfect espresso, not so much when you have them stored. We suggest that in order to avoid this, it is always best to keep coffee stored in a cool dark area, preferably in an opaque container!

Remember these three things for perfect coffee every time

  • Airtight
  • Dry
  • Cool and Dark
