How to Dye with Coffee

I think everyone can agree that getting coffee onto your clothing is the start to a very bad day, not ideal at all! However, coffee can also be used for good, to dye and produce all shades of tans, and browns… Natural Dyeing!!

What you are going to need.

  • White material for dyeing!
  • 1 litre of hot coffee (For darker browns use more coffee)
  • 1 cup of soda ash (needed to pre soak materials such as cotton, linen, rayon and silk)
  • Large stirring spoon
  • Tub for dyeing

Prepare your material by pre-washing it, make sure that the material is completely dried too. Pre-soak the material in soda ash in a tub of water, letting it soak for at least 1 hour. After the first hour add the hot coffee into the tub. Submerge the material into the coffee and stir with a wooden spoon, making sure that everything is submerged and covered. The longer you soak the garment the darker the colour will be (however, remember that the material will be lighter than what It first appears). Once a desired colour is achieved remove the material from the tub and rinse under room temperature water. After rinsing ensure to wash the material in a washing machine WITHOUT DETERGENT! Once washed ensure to hang out to dry. Have fun dyeing with coffee!
