We’ve officially declared a war on waste. From our recycling campaign with Simply Cups to repurposing used coffee grounds in partnership with Reground, our goal is to keep as much waste out of landfill as possible.
Food waste is the next villain on our hit list. In Australia, around 4 million tonnes of food waste ends up in landfill every year. It’s a huge problem that we’re tackling through a new partnership with YWaste, a free app that lists fresh food outlets offering end-of-day deals to cut down on what ends up in the landfill.
As featured on Channel 7 news last week, this initiative will help turn ‘trash into treasure’ for families on a budget, plus keep waste out of the bin. From local independent cafés to national franchises like Muffin Break, there are already 300 outlets on board.
Across the nation, a shocking one third of what’s cooked in the morning may end up in a skip. Annually, that’s enough to fill 8,400 Olympic swimming pools.
As Natalie Brennan, General Manager of Muffin Break, explained to Channel 7 News:
“In retail, you have to have product on the shelf, but if it’s a slow day you may not sell that product.”
She continued, “In stores where we can’t actually work with a partner, it will go into the bin.”
That’s where YWaste comes in.
How Does it Work?
Simply log on in the afternoon to see which local shops and restaurants have excess stock. You can then reserve your share and pay with a card online. Turn up at closing time to collect your products! The app will tell you the hours for collection.
We bake fresh every day at Muffin Break. So that means at the end of the day, you might just pick up a delicious six-pack of your favourite muffins! It will vary depending on customer flow and demand throughout the day. However, we’re committed to keeping perfectly good food out of the bin!
Be a change warrior! Join us in our war on food waste by downloading YWaste and searching for your nearest Muffin Break store.
