It’s been 12 months since Muffin Break officially launched the first part of their sustainability journey. We’ve assisted Simply Cups as a partner divert 6 million cups diverted from landfill and counting. The result? Muffin Break has been named Top 10 Most Sustainable Companies by The Australian Financial Review.
Our Commitment to Change
Natalie Brennan, General Manager of Muffin Break quotes “This is a very exciting win for our brand to be recognised for the sustainable work we embarked on. It is certainly an achievement to receive such an accolade, encouraging us to continue our sustainability journey in introducing further sustainable options for Muffin Break.”
For many, coffee plays a big part in Australia’s market as well as the amount of waste we produce, with millions of takeaway cups being sent to landfill every year in Australia alone. Reusable cups are growing in popularity, however drinking from a takeaway cup is still the go-to option for many.
The Innovative Solution
To recycle coffee cups effectively, they need to be collected as a clean waste stream. We offer designated collection tubes and bins, as well as the services to collect the cups. Simply Cups then works with innovators to recycle and upcycle takeaway cups into recycled, and recyclable, products. Currently, takeaway cups are being combined with other plastic materials (that would otherwise go to landfill, for example, grain bags, straws, lids) to create a resin suitable to upcycle into new products such as bench seats, kerbing and car stops.
“Muffin Break have played a big role in helping grow Simply Cups Australia”, said Rob Pascoe, Managing Director of Closed Loop. “Sustainability is at the heart of the Muffin Break brand, and their efforts to create awareness for the program, educate consumers, and directly lobbying shopping centres has been instrumental to the program success.”
The Award
Today, Muffin Break was honoured to be recognised as one of Australia and New Zealand’s Most Innovative Companies. The prestigious annual list was published by The Australian Financial Review and Boss Magazine. It is based on a rigorous assessment process managed by Australia’s leading innovation consultancy, Inventium, in conjunction with a panel of industry expert judges. For the first time in 2019, organisations were ranked directly against their peers across ten industry lists.
Muffin Break ranked #8 on the Retail, Hospitality Tourism & Entertainment category. This year over 800 organisations were nominated for the awards across Australia and New Zealand. The assessment measures a top innovation implemented in the past twelve months. Specifically, the judges look at how valuable the problem is that the innovation is solving, the quality and uniqueness of the solution, and the level of impact that the innovation has had.
