Baking With Balance: Building a Flexible Life with Muffin Break

Posted on 04/02/2025

A new Muffin Break has opened in Munno Para, Adelaide and franchisee Deepanshu is loving the flexibility that the franchise brings.

No stranger to early mornings, Deepanshu previously worked as a baker for Woolworths in New Zealand. For over seven years, his alarm went off at 2 a.m for a 3 a.m start!

So when it came time to choose the next step in his career, Deepanshu was determined to find a better balance between work and family life.

A Winning Franchise Recipe

After considering various franchise opportunities, he was attracted to Muffin Break for the freshly-baked muffins, streamlined systems and support from Foodco. It’s a combination that draws on his skills while providing a solid framework.

“What I really like about Muffin Break is that while it involves baking, the start time isn’t as ridiculously early,” Deepanshu says. He now starts his day at the much more civilised hour of 5 or 6 a.m.

With his Muffin Break store open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the schedule offers a welcome change from his previous routine. He’s also training up staff to give him more freedom within the business.

Holistic Support From  Foodco

While Deepanshu’s background in baking gave him a solid foundation, Muffin Break franchisees come from many different walks of life and don’t need to be experienced bakers.

As one of Australia’s top franchise groups, Foodco have created an award-winning training program which incorporates every part of running a successful franchise. It begins with a two-week intensive course at CORE, our Centre of Retail Excellence in Sydney.

“The CORE training was excellent because it gave me a crash course in operating locally,” says Deepanshu. The two-week program covers everything from food preparation and ordering to labour hire and payroll, ensuring franchisees have the right tools and knowledge to hit the ground running.

In addition, Foodco provides in-field support to help launch the store, which is then bolstered by ongoing business mentorship.

For Muffin Break Munno Para, a local coach from Foodco assisted Deepanshu during the first few weeks of operation. “Having someone from Adelaide who knew the area and the customers was incredibly helpful, as we aren’t originally from here,” Deepanshu remarks.

A Strong Start in Munno Para

Deepanshu’s new Muffin Break store opened in Munno Para Shopping Centre in late August. “We’re getting into a rhythm and starting to understand the local market,” he says. “Everything is still new at the moment, but I’m getting more confident as time passes.”

The popular Munno Para Shopping Centre benefits from high foot traffic. To celebrate the opening, the store ran a Free Coffee Day, offering complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, chai and tea.

“It was a great way to get to know the local customers and give them a taste of our coffee,” Deepanshu explains, “and it was also excellent training for our new staff to make a lot of coffees!”

They gave away an impressive 502 hot beverages on the day, plus also sold 1,196 muffins over the first five days.

Building Community Connections

As Deepanshu continues to get a feel for Munno Para, he’s also enjoying the chance to connect with the local community. “Everyone has been very friendly and we already have some regulars. I’m looking forward to building strong relationships with customers.”Another thing he’s looking forward to is tailoring the Muffin Break product range to meet the preferences of his clientele.

“We’re getting a feel for how many muffins we need to make, and one of the great qualities of Muffin Break is how large the product range is – not just muffins but also savoury items,” he says. “As we come to understand the local market better, we can continue to tailor our daily range to what they love.”

For Deepanshu, opening a Muffin Break franchise has been the perfect way to combine his love for baking with a lifestyle that offers more flexibility.

“The best thing for me with Muffin Break is the flexibility and the work-life balance it can give me compared with my previous role.”

Though Deepanshu is currently committed to working in the store seven days a week, the flexibility Muffin Break offers allows him to take half-days and leave early to pick his children up from school. He’s also intending to take more time away from the store once his staff are fully trained.

For him, this flexibility has been a game changer in achieving the work-life balance he has long been searching for. As he continues to settle into his new business, he’s excited about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead!
