Miya Zhang has hospitality in her blood. When her parents immigrated to Australia, they opened a successful Muffin Break bakery café in Belconnen. So when the opportunity arose for her to open her own Muffin Break in Majura Park shopping centre in Canberra, it felt a little bit like coming home!
With previous experience running a Michel’s Patisserie, Miya was no stranger to either hospitality or franchises. Looking for new business opportunities, it was her sister Wendy who suggested she investigate Muffin Break. She has since been blown away by the level of support which Muffin Break has offered her with her cafe business plan, marketing support and training.
“I spent three weeks training at Foodco’s National HQ in Sydney, which was really intensive. I’d made coffee before but had no idea how to bake fresh muffins. I’ve hired a baker but I now also do a lot of the baking onsite myself!”
One of the daunting aspects of opening a coffee shop is going out on your own in a competitive industry. As one of Australia’s top franchise groups, Foodco know how to equip franchisees for success.
Our award-winning Muffin Break training programs include onsite training at our Centre of Retail Excellence (CORE) facility in Sydney, as well as comprehensive online training modules, assistance with business and marketing plans and field support.
“Every new casual employee I hire will complete the online training before I train them myself,” says Miya. “Even if they have experience, it helps familiarise them with Muffin Break, as well as food safety rules.”
Miya opened her new Muffin Break cafe at Majura Park shops just under a month ago, so it has been all systems go.
“The support and training gives you a huge advantage. It was great having Sharon from the Muffin Break head office here for a couple of weeks as well, to provide advice and help me get going. It’s been busy on the weekends and getting more so in the lead up to Christmas!”
With a free coffee for customers on the 12th December, Miya is going from strength to strength and building up her regular clientele.
“It makes my day when people come back to tell me that the coffee is lovely!”
“I am not someone who wants to be stuck in an office. I love talking to people and making things with my hands all day. The marketing ideas from head office are also great, like the cartoon muffin man for the kids. ”
